God nyhed: Ruscico begynder at udgive blu-rays.
Mindre god nyhed: De starter med Burnt by the Sun.
There was no bullshit, no arty pretensions. "Doug," he'd say when we were doing Written on the Wind, "Give me some bosom."

Robert A. Harris anmelder A Star Is Born:

We all have my dear friend Ron to thank for what you're going to be seeing on the 22nd and thereafter on Warner's new Blu-ray of A Star is Born.

Ron loved film, and tying in with the Academy to create a reconstructed version of one of director George Cukor's masterpieces was his passion. He took his role extremely seriously, leaving no avenues of which he became aware un-researched.

Now, almost three decades after his work was completed, Warner Bros. has taken all of the surviving elements, placed them in a digital cauldron, and come up with a new Blu-ray, which with minor problems, is a magnificent rendering of the work performed in honor of Mr. Cukor, and which providentially, he was never able to see, having passed away shortly before the first screening of the reconstructed film.

So what do we have here?

The original four channel magnetic tracks sound tremendous in their uncompressed form.

What survives of the original negative and other extant elements look magnificent for early 1954 Eastman color negative stock.

Of all the classic films released in 2010, A Star is Born may be the most important from both an artistic as well as a historical perspective. Mr. Cukor's Star is Born is one of the most important, most magnificent, most incredibly acted film ever made in the one hundred year plus history of the motion picture.

Most people think Judy Garland when they think of A Star is Born.

I think James Mason, one of my favorite actors, who I had the honor to spend some time with in the early 1982. Seeing his work in this film once again, I am astounded.

For those who have never experienced the film, now is your chance.

The bottom line is very simple. For those who have seen it before, the experience that Mr. Haver created in 1983 at Radio City Music Hall and then at other venues, is herein majestically recreated.

A Star is Born is one of the most important films of all time, brought to Blu-ray in almost perfect fashion. My only problem is the use of grain reduction for the main title sequence, which then cuts to 16mm blow-up footage. The cut leaves me thinking of chief Emeril Lagasse and his "bam!" The titles have no grain, and hang there like a lox, always slightly out of focus.

I rate this release as Highly Recommended. Had grain reduction been used differently or with a lighter hand, the rating would have reached Very Highly Recommended.

This one is a no brainer. Please purchase it. Add it to your Blu-ray library, support film restoration, and after viewing it raise a glass and salute the memory of Ron Haver.

He deserves it.

A Star is Born er remastered ved 6K!!!

Om BD udgaven:

Famously reconstructed in the early eighties under the leadership of late film historian Ronald Haver, MPI has meticulously preserved and restored Haver's 176-minute version of A Star Is Born to its original luster, bringing back the brilliant, saturated colors and crisp picture. Using cutting edge digital restoration tools, MPI removed heavy chemical staining that affected several portions of the film and utilized an ultra-resolution recombine process to correct the heavily damaged sections. Without this painstaking preservation, the fragile negative stock in which the film was created would surely be near extinction.

About the film

George Cukor directed this classic musical drama about the doomed marriage of an entertainer whose career is on the rise (Judy Garland) and her husband whose career is in decline (James Mason). A Star Is Born marked Judy Garland's return to movies after a four-year absence, director George Cukor's first musical and first color film, and a showcase for great Harold Arden and Ira Gershwin songs in state-of-the-art stereo. One of the most beloved show business stories of all time, the film represents a career peak for many involved. Garland is singer Esther Blodgett, an undeniable talent on the rise. She catches the eye of Norman Maine (James Mason), an alcoholic actor in career decline. Their intense love transforms them both. Only one will survive Hollywood's slings and arrows. The film sports an impressive supporting cast including Jack Carson, Charles Bickford and a host of Hollywood luminaries.

Songs include "The Man That Got Away," "Lose That Long Face" and Garland's tour de force performance of "Born in a Trunk."

About the 1983 reconstruction

A Star Is Born triumphed anew in 1983 after archivist/historian Ronald Haver spent months ransacking studio vaults to spearhead a reclamation of George Cukor's original edit, ultimately funded by Warner Bros. He located the entire 181-minute soundtrack, along with footage for three lost musical numbers and portions of the deleted dialogue scenes. Where no film existed, Haver used stills-over-track for transition and only slightly trimmed the audio when photographic coverage for some sequences was deemed inadequate. Haver's A Star Is Born debuted at the sold-out New York Radio City Music Hall on July 7, 1983, with James Mason, Sid Luft, and Garland's daughters Lorna Luft and Liza Minnelli in attendance. Cukor, who had died six months before, was extolled from the stage by Fay Kanin, president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which had encouraged Haver on his search and co-sponsored the screening. It is Haver's assemblage of the picture that is presented in Warner Home Video's June 2010 release on Blu-ray.
