I think it´ll come. I read an article in Total Film about danish filmmakers, and it seemed that directors like Vinterberg and Lone Scherfig has an audience in the UK. (The article was sponsored by Carlsberg, by the way!)
I think they are looking this way, but still waiting for the huge movie to turn the tide.
I guess you´re right about the subs, it would certainly open up for a larger, potential audience. Not only restricted to the Scandinavian countries, but the entire world.
They just need to make the right movie, one that dosn´t have that french feel to it. (Like Italiensk for Begyndere has, IMO)

#15...

Dude, we speak and read English in New Zealand. It would help that Danish movies would support English subtitles. Thus allowing correct translation when supervised by Danes and not when someone hires an outsider to do the translation.

See, in my view it IS the Danes fault that they didn't put english subtitles on their DVDs. If they did, trust me, my local and online stores would have them on their shelves. It is all in the "letting the others in on the fun", factor. If we could have a chance to have Danish films, new and old with subtitles in different regions, this would promote the yotz out of the concept and I for one would invest in them. A lot of people would, just to see what it is all about.

And again, sorry if my criticizm is harsh, but I see it differently than you guys and girls.
It is not to rip on Denmark, it is simply stating that there is no evolution in Danish movies. It simply stopped. They kicked it off real good, and now it is the same old crap over and over again... That is all.

And "The Insider", sorry man for not sounding too enthused over this lady, I had no idea she was a close friend. It is not a direct critisizm on her.

But as it is now in DK, all they show is more or less 1 or 3 kinds of genres, and when the fad dies...
It dies, and then people will loose interest in watching movies. They don't have to have the entire nation watching the same kind of movies, but give room for more than crap love stories, people with issues etc. We have that in our everyday life. Try to imagine more genres in the Danish section of movies. That is what would be awesome to see.

You guys were on a role!! Keep it going, don't get stuck.

And yes, I still think it is DKs, fault that NO ONE in the rest of the world has a chance to see the "now ever growing" selection of new Danish movies.

This is a great way to let the world know how Denmark is.

But it is a mere thought amongst a bunch of people here so no need to get offended, if patriotism and nationalism should overshadow the clear picture, then why even discuss it?
I have by far not seen ALL danish movies, but those I have, that I liked, I recommend it to people.

They always leave me with this line once they saw it, : "Cool movie, do you have more?" And the answer would be ; "Uh sorry they don't usually put subtitles on their DVDs, so no I don't".

(this letter was edited and shortened so if there are segments that sound funny, it is cause you see the company version of this letter. They didn't feel comfortable with the Directors cut...) ;-)

There is evolution in danish movie, just watch the fabolous 'Drabet' by Per Fly this year - That's one of the best movies coming out of this country for years in my opinion, so certainly something must be happening, even if just at a small scale.

Ahhh, nice... Thanks KS

Now you have probably seen this coming, but here goes anyway : Does the DVD come with English subtitles?

Perhaps I should just buy it anyway when I come visit soon.

Thanks KS, will look into it...

Right now it hasn't been released for DVD, but 99% of the new movies released onto DVD here comes with nordic+eng subs, so it shouldn't be a problem.
