DVDTOWN review, John J. Puccio

Video:
As you probably know, the most controversial part of the video concerns the framing of the image for widescreen viewing. Apparently, when Universal went back to the full-frame, open-matte negatives to do the DVDs, they made some changes, intentional or not, from the laser disc framing. Then they issued an official press release as follows: "Universal Studios Home Video is aware of a minor technical framing issue on the 'Back to the Future Trilogy' widescreen DVDs. The framing appears differently from the laserdisc releases for approximately two minutes during 'Back to the Future II' and four minutes during 'Back to the Future III.' The framing difference is unnoticeable to widescreen DVD viewers and does not detract from or interrupt the viewing experience. Consumers with further questions can call (888) 703-0010."

Well, the studio is probably right in saying that the differences are unnoticeable (whether they meant "widescreen" or "full screen" or whatever), because unless a viewer has a photographic memory of the theatrical versions or has the laser discs on hand for direct comparison, there is little to notice. As I had not seen the movies in years nor had ever seen the laser discs, I did not notice anything in the least amiss about the transfers. There are numerous other, more serious continuity errors and outright flubs in the three movies that casual viewers like myself would never even notice, so the dispute over the widescreen framing of the DVDs may be making a mountain out of a mole hill. In any case, I doubt that anyone but the most meticulous "Back to the Future" partisan need worry about any possible framing problems.

All three films are available either in anamorphic widescreen or pan-and-scan formats, sold separately, but as always, controversy or no, I'd advise the widescreen. Each widescreen edition I watched is framed in an aspect ratio measuring approximately 1.74:1 across a normal television. As might be expected, the picture quality in the first movie, being the oldest by some four years, is perhaps the least perfect, but it's still plenty good enough. The overall quality of all three releases is a tad dark, with a touch of grain in especially dim areas and a few wavering lines here and there. The second and third movies benefit from bigger budgets but the picture quality remains consistent, maybe a little brighter, richer in color, and sharper overall in the later installments.

Guess it wouldn't be the holiday season without a problem on a major studio DVD release. Universal's Back to the Future Trilogy DVD set contains all three films on disc, as you know. But what you may not know is that the widescreen versions of Back to the Future 2 & 3 on the set are mis-framed (badly or not depending on who you ask). But word is Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale aren't happy, and so Universal is going to be addressing the issue in the new year with replacement discs for those who want them. The corrected discs will be available in late February - call (888) 703-0010 for all the details.

I'm not even going to comment on the fact that Universal is knowingly selling mis-produced discs to make its holiday sales numbers, hoping that most of you will never notice the problem. The studio has decided, in its wisdom, to stop providing review copies of its new titles to many (if not all) review publications. So if you're wondering why there are so few reviews of the set online and in print, it's 'cause Universal apparently wants it that way. For our part here at The Digital Bits, we will no longer be reviewing ANY Universal DVD product until they change this policy.

Anyway, if you're a fan of Back to the Future, and you haven't picked up the set yet, buyer beware.
