- evermind
Here is some of my favorite Art House Cinemas in New York:
Film Forum 209 W. Houston Street tel: 212 727 8110
The well established Film Forum actually consists of 2 film theatres - Film Forum I being the showcase for obscure masterworks, arthouse debuts, and experimental oddities by avant garde directors like Jan Svankmajer and Frederick Wiseman, whereas Film Forum 2 specializes in reruns of old film classics. ----------------------------------------------------------------
Angelika Film Center 18 W. Houston Street tel: 212 995 2570
Opening in 1989 on the border of Greenwich Village and Soho, the Angelika has become known as a temple of the avant garde, catering for the independent/foreign film buffs amongst us. Check out its exclusive screening and midnight showings. ----------------------------------------------------------------
Cinema Classics 332 East 11th Street tel: 212 675 6692
Cinema Classic is in a class of its own. With its coffee shop stocked with books on films opening up into a mini 16mm movie theatre that seats around 70 people, (furnished with old original movie house seats), showing a classic repertoire of 60s and 70s films and arthouse video store it is the perfect haven for the cineophile.
Other good ones are:
BAM Rose Cinemas 30 Lafayette Avenue at Flatbush Ave , New York tel: 718 623-2770 ---------------------------------------------------------------- Bryant Park 42nd Street , New York tel: 212 922 9393 ---------------------------------------------------------------- Lincoln Center--Walter Reade Theater 165 W. 65th Street , New York tel: 212 875 5600 ---------------------------------------------------------------- Lincoln Plaza Cinemas 30 Lincoln Plaza , New York tel: 212 757 2280 ---------------------------------------------------------------- Naturemax Theater Central Park West , New York tel: 212 769 5100 ---------------------------------------------------------------- Ocularis 70 N. 6th Street , Brooklyn tel: 718 388 8713 ---------------------------------------------------------------- Quad Cinema 34 W. 13th Street , New York tel: 212 255 8800 ---------------------------------------------------------------- The Screening Room 54 Varick Street , New York tel: 212 334 2100 ---------------------------------------------------------------- Void 16 Mercer Street , New York tel: 212 941 6492 ---------------------------------------------------------------- Walter Reade Theatre 165 W. 65th Street , New York tel: 212 875 5600
A good one for Independant films is The Quad Cinema, witch truly is a New York institution. The Quad Cinema has been showing the best of foreign and independent films for over 25 years. Family owned and operated, the Quad continues to book films which are unique, original, and intellectual to appeal to a loyal following of New York moviegoers. Ex-mayor Ed Koch, a very big film buff and now (among other things) a film critic wrote "The Quad is one of New York's best offbeat film houses". We're located in the heart of Greenwich Village, near some great shopping and dining. So make a day of it.
