"'The Shinings' hemmeligheder"
&
"Cracking the Code in ‘Heeere’s Johnny!’"

Fra sidstnævnte artikels kommentarsektion:

Okay, for anyone who reads through this many comments ... From 1977 through 1980, I worked for Bob Gaffney. Gaffney was an associate of Kubrick's from the early 60s onwards, including being the producer of the never-finished Napoleon.

Kubrick called Gaffney frequently when I worked there and when he was working on The Shining.

According to Gaffney, Kubrick told him that he picked The Shining because he needed a surefire box office success following Barry Lyndon, otherwise he might lose the degree of creative control he had for so many years. He felt that picking a Stephen King book would give him that success. I was told that Kubrick absolutely hated the book.

In particular, given the technology at the time, Kubrick felt that if he filmed the ending as written, the audience would leave the theater laughing. Everyone in Gaffney's office was asked to contribute ideas on a new ending.

Anyway, he may well have had some deeper agenda or subtext in mind. All I know is that he was consciously looking for a hit.
