So...is "The Innocents" a ghost story or psychological study? Who can say? And to be honest, who cares? It is, at the very least, a damned good movie...and at the very best, a horror story that makes "The Shining," "Rosemary's Baby," "The Others" and even "Psycho" (a movie I love) look like the works of children. That this film is not available on DVD is a travesty.
Due on the 22nd is director Akira Kurosawa's masterpiece Ran which arrives as a two-disc edition with a newly-restored transfer, Chris Marker's 74-minute documentary on Kurosawa's craft in making the film, an introduction by filmmaker Sidney Lumet, a half-hour Toho documentary on the making of the film, a half-hour video piece reconstructing the film through Kurosawa's paintings and sketches, a new interview with star Tatsuya Nakadai and more. Retail is $39.95 apiece.
"Let the universe howl in despair, for I have returned..." - Lord Darkseid
An unquestionable masterpiece from Sturges' purple period with comedy that is broad, blasphemous and funny as all hell.
Trudy Kockenlocker (a manipulative but sweet Hutton), the daughter of a widowed small-town police constable (a put-upon Demarest) with a soft spot for men in uniform wakes one morning after a wild farewell party for her country's servicemen, to find herself married and pregnant. She has no recollection of who to or how. Enter lovesick tool Norval Jones (a brilliantly gormless Bracken), only too eager to help the woman he's carried a torch for over the years.
And it's breathless, knockabout stuff from here on in, the gags and pratfalls unrelenting. Make no mistake, there's nothing particularly polite here, and none of the heart-warming decency often attributed to other classic screwballs. Sturges lets it all hang out, never passes over a joke and somehow manages to sustain the pace and quality
