the buses that charged past so overflowing with passengers that from the outside they looked like they were making a rush delivery of spare limbs to some far-off war
Last year was the 20th anniversary of Miami Vice, and the film elements are showing their age. The prints contain quite a bit of dust in spots, but are spotless in others. There were some other minor glitches, like a line that ran down the side of the print for a bit, but I was expecting that because of the age of the materials. People often ask why TV shows aren't restored like movies are; it's a matter of cost. Restoring a movie (1.5-3 hours) is much cheaper than restoring 18 hours of a TV series. An avergae movie will bring in more money than a TV show, so the TV sets have smaller budgets. Sure, there are some shows that are restored, like Image's recent Twilight Zone set, but the majority aren't. I've seen more dust in a recent series than I saw in Miami Vice, but I wanted to make people aware of it since it's a glaring problem with the set.
Besides the dust, the picture looks quite nice. It's sharp, which I'd expect from film, though the black levels are a tad off. I noticed some night shots appeared dark grey instead of black, but then other shots were fine. I caught an episode of Miami Vice on TV recently, and the colors on the DVDs look a lot better. The show used a muted color pallette (pastels instead of solids), but it translated well to DVD. Each disc contains a "play all" feature, and there's a chapter set after the opening of the show.

- Women remember, Steve. It's like they've got minds of their own.
