Scorsese looks at the people who call 3D a gimmick, compares us to those who thought motion pictures were a fad a century ago, then goes on to show us what's probably the most gorgeous live-action 3D film ever made.
In fact, it makes the gangster pictures look almost totally foreign by comparison. “Hugo” melds many of of Scorsese’s passions and obsessions and acts as an unabashed, multi-tiered homage to cinema, its origins and history, his advocacy for film preservation, as well as a tribute to his three daughters. ... It’s surely going to win-over cinephiles, but there’s still a question whether its old-fashioned storybook mien will connect with modern-day audiences. But the patient viewer will be rewarded. Especially in the film’s magical finale, which arguably the most moving and loving sequences Scorsese has ever committed to celluloid.
...that made Hugo one I imagine will end up being (for me) one of the best mainstream films of the year. ... Hands down, this might be the best 3D I've seen in the technique's recent revival. ... but from moment one I was gripped by the movie's heart and soul.

While it's definitely going to be an acquired taste, especially for kids, the movie is going to be a great way for parents to introduce their older kids to the joys of cinema, which Scorsese so perfectly captures in every frame of his movie. We can't wait to see it again and write more in-depth about the movie.
A striking lesson in film history and the importance of film preservation is unraveled in the remainder – and all with a level of enjoyment that only Scorsese could bring.
One thing is made abundantly clear from the beginning: When Scorsese said with 3D “every shot is rethinking cinema,” he was not kidding. From the opening, as a flurry of snow flakes grace the screen and we glide in one motion from above the city, down into the main platform of a train station (albeit with computer-generated patrons in this work-in-progress), the effect is immediately realized.
The live-action 3D is the best I’ve ever seen, as city landscapes are suddenly given life with trains passing in the background and lights in the distance, each containing their own specific depth of field.
Hugo is a film that everyone should see, but not because it appeals to a mass audience. Scorsese has crafted a work that educates as much as it entertains, and one that I appreciate more than inherently love. It has the power to be that one experience to turn a casual young moviegoer into a lifelong film fanatic. After all, a young Martin Scorsese was probably no different than Hugo Cabret himself.

Derudover går der rygter om, at filmen vil blive screenet ved NYFF i morgen! Spændende bliver det i hvert fald.
