The WGA Awards have always been a good indicator for the Academy Awards. From 1990 onwards, only six winners did not win the Academy Award:
in 1990 Avalon lost to Ghost, in 1994 Four Weddings and a Funeral lost to Pulp Fiction (not nominated for a WGA Award), in 1995 Braveheart lost to The Usual Suspects (not nominated for a WGA Award), in 1997 As Good As It Gets lost to Good Will Hunting, in 2000 You Can Count on Me lost to Almost Famous and in 2002 Bowling for Columbine lost to Hable con ella (Talk to Her) (not nominated for a WGA Award).
Since 1990, the WGA Award for Best Adapted Screenplay has been a good indicator for its Oscar equivalent, the Academy Award for Writing Adapted Screenplay. All but the following WGA winners were also Oscar winners:[citation needed]
* in 1992 The Player lost to Howards End, * in 1998 Out of Sight lost to Gods and Monsters, * in 1999 Election lost to The Cider House Rules, * in 2002 The Hours lost to The Pianist (not nominated for a WGA Award) * in 2003 American Splendor lost to The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. and * in 2009 Up in the Air lost to Precious: Based on the novel Push by Sapphire.
